Historical Hiking in the French Riviera

The Cote d’Azur, or the French Riviera as it is referred to in English, is a magnificent stretch of coastline running between Menton, near the Italian border, and Hyéres. 115km of coastline makes up the region, and the Mediterranean climate provides 300 days of sunshine. It is a perfect place for a French walking holiday, where you can ramble beside the bright blue sea and sandy beaches.

The name Cote d’Azur, refers to the colours blue and gold, with the blue being that of the Mediterranean ocean and the gold referring to the region’s rising economy.

Early European Influences

Being an area of such great beauty with an excellent climate, it is no small wonder that many European countries wanted to have a share in the area. In the 7th century BC, Greek sailors travelling from Asia Minor began visiting and establishing trading posts in the area. Settlements were developed and trading began with the inhabitants of the interior. This has seen a visible Greek influence in the region, and a great way to learn the history while you enjoy the scenery is on a hiking tour in France.

Roman influence began in 8 BC, when Emperor Augustus built La Turbie (Trophy of the Alps) and began building towns, monuments and amphitheatres along the coast, many of which you will still be able to stumble over on your French walking holiday. Two notable amphitheatres which still remain standing are the amphitheatre and bath at Cimiez, and the amphitheatre and Roman walls at Frejus. These ancient sites add a Roman twist to the ground you will tread on your walking holiday in France.

The Early Days of the Resort

The French Riviera was one of the first modern resorts to be established in the south of France, and hiking in this area will clearly show you why. Its beauty is unrivalled, and its climate is gentle, making it the perfect retreat to escape the British winter.

It was originally established as a winter health resort for sickly British tourists, where they could escape the cold and return to health. Until the end of the 18th century, the area consisted of local people leading simple lives, where the focus was on growing olives, fishing, and producing flowers for perfume.

The French Riviera first started to gain attention when Tobias Smollett, a British traveller, described the benefits of the health resort in his book, ‘Travels Through France and Italy,’ in 1765. This was the beginning of spreading the idea of the French Riviera as an ideal place for a French walking holiday.

At the same time, Scottish doctor John Brown gained fame when he prescribed climato-therapy, a therapy based on climate change to cure a range of illnesses such as tuberculosis. A trip to the French Riviera was the ideal place for this therapy to occur, as the climate was perfect in the south of France. Hiking in this region could have a similar effect on a holiday, where the fresh sea air, exercise and warm weather will revitalise you.

A Perfect Holiday Destination

Once attention was drawn to the area, it became a favourite destination of the aristocracy. British nobleman Henry Peter Broughman loved the area so much after travelling through the region with his ill sister that he bought land a built a villa there, where he spent most of his summers. Other members of the British aristocracy followed suit, recognising the benefits of a French walking holiday.

With the development of the railway in the 19th century, the area became easily accessible to Europe, and in 1865, one hundred thousand visitors flocked to the area. Casino resorts were built, the most notable being Monte Carlo, established by Charles III. Gradually the area became more popular with tourists from America and Europe, and no longer belonged to the aristocracy.

The perfect place for hiking in France or simply sitting by the sea, the area quickly became popular with celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot, Elton John, and Princess Diana. With so many people attesting to its beauty, it must be an ideal destination for a French walking holiday.

The Historical past of Hawaiian Occasional

The world’s most preferred beverage, gourmet coffee, comes in the Arab phrase qahwa. It virtually implies ‘that which prevents from sleep’. Though HI is not the spot exactly where caffeine originated, it has turn out to be the setting within the world’s most sought-after gourmet coffee beans. HI required a lengthy time period as well as the ideal harmony in between the local weather, soil and farmers to deal with to achieve that standing. Let’s consider a take a look at the historical past of Hawaiian espresso.I feel its a fantastic coffee history

Caffeine crops are a member within the Rubiaceae household, which have been 1st found inside the mountains of Kaffa, in Ethiopia. A man named Kaldi, who was herding goats in these mountains, noticed the goats consuming crazy berries. Just after the goats ate the crazy berries, they have been acting incredibly energetically. Kaldi grew to become especially curious and attempted some on the crazy berries. He felt the surplus of power himself. Quickly immediately after this discovery, these crazy berries grew to become well known all through the location specifically inside the monasteries; simply because they assisted monks meditate lengthier. Following that, occasional seeds were definitely found and shared in other components with the planet. It quickly grew to become a particularly preferred beverage. Inside the 18th century, Johann Sebastian Bach composed an opera titled “The Java Cantata”. The heroine sings: ‘coffee is further scrumptious than a thousand kisses and sweeter than muscatel wine”. This History of coffee also makes me really feel wonderful story.

Paperwork reveal that the 1st java seeds got here to HI in 1813. About 12 many years later, paperwork display the registry of a java plantation in Manoa Valley. The low bushes ended up acquired because of the Governor of Oahu, Chief Boki, who introduced these crops from Rio de Janeiro. The gourmet coffee bushes had been planted in Oahu, in Manoa Valley and quickly they started being launched to other areas of Oahu. Kona gourmet coffee farms arrived to existence when Reverend Samuel Ruggles recognized his base in Captain Cook, Kona back again in 1828. Gourmet coffee bushes ended up being planted on that base, and started to flourish in their new house. An early gourmet coffee plantation founded in 1842 grew to become the Hanalei Valley, that is situated for the North Shore of Kauai. Though the local weather and soil of HI developed very wholesome low crops that resulted in a very distinctive item, the economic system didn’t aid the survival of giant low plantations. This can be when the gigantic farms have been changed by little Kona caffeine farms with an common of five acres per farm. The tremendous plantations’ time was more than.

The place exactly where the world’s best gourmet coffee is grown is known as the Kona Flavored coffee Belt. It’s an place 20 miles lengthy and 2 miles broad. This belt is situated over the slopes of Mauna Loa and Hualalai. It incorporates about 600 independent Kona occasional farms, which selection in dimension from three to five acres. You will find several bigger farms inside the place that include a tiny more than 50 acres each and every. From the 1930s, HI registered a lot more than a thousand occasional farms in Maui, Kauai and Molokai, too as Oahu plus the Huge Island of HI. Roughly six,500 acres are in manufacturing across the state, making about 7 million kilos of green beans each yr.

Choosing The Exterior Paint For A Historical Home

Owners of historical homes know that choosing paint colors is a nerve-wracking and critically important decision. Ready-mix paints have been available since the middle part of the nineteenth century and from that time home owners have had to choose their colors without really knowing how their finished home will look. After all, a two inch paint chip looks very different from a 3,000 square foot house!

In a visit to New England in the 1840s, famed novelist Charles Dickens commented, “All the buildings looked as if they had been painted that morning … Every house is the whitest of white; every shutter is the greenest of green.”

If you have an older home and want to choose colors other than green and white, here are some guidelines”

1. Light colors “advance” a home while dark colors cause it to “recede”. This means that lighter shades will make your home appear larger and closer to the street, while darker shades make your home seem smaller and further away. If you want your house to blend in and be less noticeable, therefore, a darker hue is best.

2. Light dramatically affects how colors appear to the human eye. In cooler climates the light is diffused and bold colors are intensified. In southern climates, the harsher, brighter sunlight will cause pale tints to appear washed out.

3. If you want your gutters and downspouts to be less noticeable, paint them the same color as the house.

4. Make sure any mildew problems are solved before painting. Test suspicious spots with household bleach and if they change color, you definitely have a mildew problem.

5. Moisture problems must be eliminated before painting. If they are not, water will ruin even the best paint job.

6. Some paint manufacturers offer color ‘families’ to simplify choosing. That is, there are several colors that go well together and eliminate the agony of figuring out the exact right shade for the trim so that it will relate well to the primary exterior color.

7. It’s always possible to get expert help. This is especially desirable if you own a historical landmark and wish for it to be restored to its former appearance. Historical paint consultants are familiar with shades available at the time the home was built and can often do research to determine original colors. These folks understand chemical changes in paint and can usually figure out what the original colors looked like before they faded to today’s milder colors.

8. There is software available that allows home owners to scan in a picture of their home and then try out different colors without making an actual commitment. It’s powerful to see your home in Colonial Barn Red or Patriot Federal Blue before actually putting a drop of color on the outside.

9. You might consider staining your historical property, rather than painting it. Stain is cheaper and it won’t peel off or crack the way paint does. This is because it actually sinks into the wood, rather than coating it so it will instead weather and dim over time. Stain won’t cover up any imperfections in the wood the way paint does, however.

Owning and living in a historically significant home is a privilege and maintaining that house is a responsibility to take seriously. Therefore, avoid hasty color choices and take the time to choose wisely.

Historical Facts About Thanksgiving Turkey

Prominent among all the symbols of Thanksgiving the turkey adorns the dining table of all Americans. As far as its nativity goes, the wild turkey is a native of North Mexico and the Eastern United States. People have the misconception that the bird belongs to the country Turkey but in reality the bird has nothing to do with the place sharing the similar name. Although the turkey is very famous among the Americans but Alaska has little to rejoice, as the place has no turkeys, accounting to the too very cold weather. The bird has an amazing combination of brown features and buff colored feathers on both its tail and and wings. But in this case the male turkeys steal the show with their colorful plumage and the “wattle” which is the piece of skin hanging from their throat and beard like tuft on their chest. The female turkey is called the “hen”. On account of its royal meat and the high quality egg that it lays, the turkey soon found a place for itself in the poultry farm of Mexico and then Europe towards the early 16th century.

Research suggests that there are two species of turkeys, the North American Wild Turkey and the Central American Ocellated Turkey.
Zelda,a female wild turkey has lived in New York’s Battery park since 2003 Turkeys have been known by different names at different places. To name a few, it is called , dundjan in Maltese, tarnegol hodu in Hebrew and indiuk in the Russian language.

As far as the history of the turkey for Thanksgiving goes, we need to dig into William Bradford’s famous work ” History Of Plymouth Plantation”. The Governor had sent four of his men for fowling and they had come back with turkeys, ducks and geese. The Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland and Bourbon Red are some of the common breeds of the American turkeys.

Benjamin Franklin had once said “The turkey is a much more respectable Bird and a true original Native of North America”. In fact the turkey had become such a famous bird that the scientists cum statesman of America were in the idea of replacing the bald eagle, the national bird of America, to a turkey. Such was the liking for this particular species.

A very famous event called the National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation takes place every year at the White house where the President of America is presented with a turkey by the turkey industry. As per the tradition the President gives a “presidential pardon” to the turkey and it happily goes to a separate farm to live the rest of its life. This tradition of gifting turkey to presidents dates back to the year 1947 when the first National Thanksgiving Turkey was given to President Harry Trueman. The turkey to be gifted on the National Thanksgiving Day are given a special treatment unlike any other ordinary turkey. The turkeys to be gifted are separated for their flock and raised separately on the Trites farm. These turkeys are hand fed and a specially made to interact with the people to familiarize them with the local crowd. The year 2005 stood witness to the 58th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Presentation and two turkeys were lucky enough to get the presidential pardon and went their ways merrily to live in Disneyland. Ever since the year of its beginning, every president has performed their task of pardoning a turkey.

A Historical Guide To Aruba

Aruba is a Caribbean paradise many people have long dreamt of going to. It is a long island, approximately 32 kilometers, found in the Caribbean Sea and north of Venezuela. Aruba has dry climate and a landscape that is cactus strewn. Tourists looking for a sunny and warm weather can enjoy immensely in this lovely place.

Every place has its own history. This history molds the culture of the area making it what it is known today.

How did Aruba begin? Who were its first settlers? To have a better understanding of the islands present situation, one must look at its colorful history.

Aruba got its name from oro huba, which is a Spanish phrase meaning there was gold. But since no gold was found by the Spanish people, they thought that the island has no value at all. Some believers claim that the island got its name from oruba, an Indian word which meant well placed. Another possibility is the word ora and oubao which means shell and island respectively.

Caquetios Indians of the so called Arawak tribe were the first inhabitants of Aruba. That time, the Caribs were attacking these tribes, and so they migrated to Aruba from Venezuela. The island of Aruba is distant from the popular Caribbean islands, and so the island is closely tied with South America. Indian settlers were able to leave significant fragments which dated back to 1,000 A.D discovered in modern times.

In 1499, a Spanish explorer named Alonso de Ojeda arrived on the island and established a European colony. Many of the Caquetios Indians were enslaved to Hispaniola.

The Dutch was able to acquire Aruba in 1636, and was controlled by them for almost two centuries. The Indians remained free, unlike with the Spanish colony. Military personnel maintained the place. During the Napoleonic wars in 1805, the island was briefly controlled by the British people. And by 1816, it was then returned to the Dutch.

The discovery of gold in 1824 improved the life on the island. It was then able to make major exports of dividivi pods, gold, phosphate, and aloe. The operations ceased in 1916 because of the dwindling supplies of gold, and the mining industry soon became unprofitable.

In 1924, a trans-shipment facility for crude oil opened in Aruba which paved way for the islands prosperity; and in 1928, an oil refinery was also opened which was named Lago Oil and Transport Company Limited. This was located on the east side of Aruba island, and on the west was a small refinery named Royal Dutch Shell. In 1985, the refinery closed.

During the 20th centurys last decades, the tourism in Aruba greatly improved. The island has many resorts, and therefore has a small unemployment rate. It even earned the reputation as the Las Vegas in the Caribbean area. In all of West Indies, the island has the most superior standard of living with a very low illiteracy rate.

By the year 1986, Aruba became one of the Kingdom of the Netherlands autonomous member. The residents of the island are a mixture of Europeans, Americans, Far East, and Caribbean.

In 1991, the Coastal Oil Co. re-opened the refinery.

Many of Arubas geographical areas are named after Indian warriors and chiefs, like Turibana, Camacuri, Andicuri, Guadirikiri, and Bushri.

Aruba is among the most admired vacation spots along the Caribbean. Approximately a million tourists visit the island annually. If you are looking for a perfect vacation place, Aruba can offer you all its grandeur.

A Historical Look at Corunna

It was once said that if you have ever visited Galicia to go to Santiago de Compostela and thought of leaving without seeing Corunna you were making a massive mistake.

Because of the fine natural harbour, Corunna has always been a fairly major regional “place of importance” and this has continued down through the ages.

In ancient times it was used by the Celts and Phoenicians before becoming an important Roman port, Ardobicum Coronium. It’s trading relations on a see spread far and wide and Corunna remains a major port. It is the westernmost member of the Hermandad de las Marismas, a trading league formed in 1926 along hanseatic lines.

Corunna was always the port in north western Spain that had the leading contact with British sailors who referred to it often as “the Groyne”. It was the obvious choice for disembarkation for British pilgrims wishing to visit Santiago de Compostela and the tomb of St James, This route fast became known as the Camino Ingles and was actually the easiest of all of the routes to Santiago (especially when the weather was benign in the Bay of Biscay).

As a point of entry to Northern Spain, Corunna as has been said has always been of significance. In 1386 the English prince John of Gaunt, son of Edward III decided to invade and avenge the murder of his brother in law Pedro I. He landed in Corunna and after what eventually turned out to be a farcical march through Galicia, thankfully for all parties concerned common sense prevailed and peace deal was brokered whereby Gaunt’s daughter would marry the heir to the throne of Castile. The Castilian king came up with enough compensation for Gaunt (obviously the hand of his daughter in marriage to his son was an uneven deal) and thankfully Gaunt returned to England (via Corunna) with honour satisfied.

Again in later years, Corunna was witness again to another arrival of interfering European royalty when after Gaunt’s great-granddaughter, the Catholic monarch Isobel died, Phillip the Fair from Flanders decided to try his luck in 1506 and claim the Castilian throne from Fernando.

Again in later generations the transport of royalty came to the fore with this time, Philip II deciding to use Corunna as embarkation point before travelling to England to marry Mary at Winchester. As history has shown this was obviously a major success in terms of International Relations because 34 years later he tried to repeat the same exercise this time with 130 ships and 30,000 men. The Spanish Armada thus sailed from Corunna but sadly as again history will tell with not much in the way of success.

Of all of the tales of Corunna and the sea perhaps the most appealing is that of Maria Pita. In 1507 a force of English ships led by the then Frances Drake (in his former and perhaps true guise of Buccaneer) landed at Corunna and attempted to raise the town to the ground by way of fire. A girl from the town, Maria Pita, seized an English flag and rallied the townsfolk to not only repel the buccaneering English invaders but also managed to save the town as well.

The Historical Clothes of Old

In the animal kingdom, animals have developed a means to protect themselves from the harsh elements that the environment delivers such as furs, thick skins, scales or shells.
