Weather Is A Combination Of Many Conditions

Weather is the result of reaction between the Earth’s atmosphere to the Sun coupled with encounters with other random and limiting factors like the friction with land and the earth’s gravitational force.

The average of the variable weather conditions for over a long period of time is referred to as the Climate. How can the possible weather conditions of a geographical area be predicted? Average conditions of a place considered for a period of more than 30 years along with the prevalent extremities describe the climate of that area.

The description of climate of a particular place should consist of the information related to the rainfall, cloud cover, moisture, direction and speed of wind, prevalent temperatures, time of sunshine and several other factors.

Our desire is to learn the ways of predicting the possible climatic variations in the similar fashion like we wish to predict about the oncoming weather conditions. However, the time periods for climatic changes are much more compared to the time of weather changes.

Climate Zones

It has been a constant endeavor of the mankind to explore and know the world. This is no exception for climate and weather as well. With the increase in our understanding about the different patterns of weather and climate for longer time periods, we have created our unique ways of classifying and summarizing the different zones of global climate.

These climate zones are differentiated based on the Antarctic and Arctic circles, whose latitudes are 66.5 degrees south and north respectively and the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5 degrees north and south respectively.

This area in between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn is known as low latitudes. The climate along this area is characterized by high humidity, heavy rains and minimal temperature variation and is known as tropical climate.

The areas within the tropics and Antarctic and Arctic circles are referred to as the middle latitudes. These areas usually experience moderate climates with four distinct seasons. This type of climate is referred to as the temperate climates that have cold winters and warm summers with a uniform rainfall.

The region between the Antarctic and Arctic circles and the poles is called the high latitudes that experience polar climates. The winters are very long and cold while the summers are a little warmer here. Snowfall is very common in the Polar climate zones.

Though the climate zones provide with a broad overview of the global weather, each zone experience some variations in the local weathers. These climate zones are further sub-classified based on maritime and continental places. The maritime places are the areas along the coasts that have a very different climate from the continental or inland places. However the sub-classifications cannot justify the variations due to the ocean currents and mountain ranges.

It is obvious that the global zones of climate vary locally to some extent. In some cases, these variations may persist for a long time and result in anomalies in the climatic conditions. Still the classifications of global zones of climate are useful in providing with an idea of the weather patterns across the globe and the expected weather for an area.

Description: The Manchester Terrier comes in two heights, the standard and toy. The standard height is 15 to 16 inches with an average weight of around 18 pounds, with the bitch being slightly less at 17 pounds. The Toy breed is 10 to 12 inches in height. Their weight is around 6 to 8 pounds, and in the United States they are accepted at 12 pounds. This breed’s head is closely skinned, extended, and narrow. The head is almost flat with a slight notch to the forehead. Their ears when natural are V in shape and half erect, with the folded front flap. In the toy variety ears are usually totally erect. If cropping is permitted, the ears are cropped long and pointed. The eyes are almond shaped, and dark in colour. The teeth should meet in a level or scissor bite. They have a black nose. The tail is thick at the base and tapers to a point. The coat comes in black and tan, with distinctive starting and stopping points, and does not have blending. The coat is dense and short and tight to the skin.

History: Here we see the oldest known Terrier breed. The Manchester Terrier, like most terriers, were bred for ratting. This breed started in the 19th century, in the city of Manchester, in England. This breed is known as the best rat killing breed, of dog. In a contest, held in Manchester, a dog called Billy was said to have killed a hundred rats in 6 minutes and 13 seconds. This breeds’ gene pool comes from crossing black and tan terriers with the Whippet. This breed became a companion dog in Queen Victoria’s era, where small dogs became popular as people followed Queen Victoria’s lead. The Doberman Pinscher looks in fact, comes from this breed rather than the other way around.

Temperament: The Manchester Terrier is intelligent and eager, to learn. With their ability and a true Terrier nature they can be independent and faithful. This dog is exceptionally lively and will require plenty of walking and play. This dog will enjoy plenty of exercise off the lead, as their need to be running is high. This breed loves to please their owners, and can be fantastic in activities such as agility training or obedience trials. With their great want of your attention, they do require good leadership from their owner, and plenty of mental and physical exercise. Without the daily activities, this dog can get stressed, when left alone. This can lead to boredom and destructiveness, and they have been reported to be excessive barkers if ignored. If good leadership is established, you as the owner are allowed to leave the dog, but the dog is not allowed to leave you. So if your dog feels they are the leader you should not leave them. So establishing good leadership with your dog can prevent so many problems and give your dog the confidence to be alone. This breed loves to be with their family and will love nothing more than walking with them daily. Socialise, this dog well as a puppy, and give good rules and leadership to gain the best from this breed.

Health issues: This breed can have glaucoma, blood problems, Von Willebrand’s, which is a bleeding problem, this is rare. They may have heat problems so keep a good check of their skin in hot weather.

Grooming: This breed has little to no grooming requirements. Rub over with a rubber brush to add a shine to their coat as and when you wish.

Living conditions: The Manchester Terrier is good for apartment living, providing, they have had plenty of outdoor exercise. This breed is active in doors and will do well with the small size garden but can cope without a garden.

This breed comes from Yorkshire in England and was created by the working man, who wanted a dog that could catch the terrible rats and mice infected the mills and mine shafts. The Yorkshire terrier is not an old breed and came into existence in the 19th century. It is believed it came in part from Scotland’s with the migrating workers.

Description: The English bulldog is of medium size, a compact but wide dog with short legs. The body and head are well built, with extra skin on both the skull and forehead. Their cheek extends to the side of the eyes. It has a short but wide muzzle with a broad and deep stop. The nose is broad with large nostrils and is black in colour. This breed has dark eyes that are setback. They have ears that are small, thin, and set high on the head. With large jaws, that are also broad and square with hanging upper lips, this breed should have an under bite. The tail is screwed, but can be straight. This is carried low. Their coat is short smooth, flat and glossy. Others include red brindle, and other shades of brindle, solid red, solid white, piebald, pale yellow, fawn, Fallow or washed out and read the white and the combination of these colours is acceptable.

History: This breed originated in the British Isles. This breed descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff. The name bull came from a popular sport, of the time, that used dogs to fight bulls. This breed was ferocious, courageous and extremely aggressive, with a muscular body built with the power to attack a fully grown bull. This practice was banned in the 19th century, and we see today, the bulldog with a different temperament, to the one needed in the ring to fight the balls. However, it is wise to remember, this dog still retains a strong strength of mind.

Temperament: While this dog still looks intimidating, it is one of the gentlest dogs available today. It, however, still will see off any intruder, that would dare to encounter this dog. This breed is affectionate and gentle with children. However, it can be very persistent and determined, when it wishes. Combined with the gift, not to give up easily. This breed is very much a people dog and loves getting attention and affection. With all dogs, leadership needs to firmly but fairly rest with the owner. And this will make a good all-round dog that is well balanced. This breed is good with other family pets. More full of energy when younger, but this tapers down as the dog gets older. They snore loudly, and most have drooling and slobbering tendencies, and are messy eaters, due to their small snout. Without good leadership, and the human being, the Alpha, the bulldog can display strange, guarding tendencies; this can be to furniture or their toys or other rooms in the home.

Health issues: This breed is prone to breathing problems, poor eyesight, and hip and knee problems and can be prone to flatulence. They are also able to have heatstroke in warm weather or hot rooms, and are very sensitive to cold. Grooming: The English bulldog does not need much grooming; but everyday needs to have their face, wiped with a damp cloth and be cleaned inside the wrinkles, to prevent sores or infections. Their coat needs brushing or combing with a firm brush twice weekly. Bath this dog only when necessary.

Living conditions: This breed is surprisingly an indoor dog, and is exceptionally good for apartment life. Providing they have adequate exercise and their needs around temperature control are met.

The Lowchen breed is also called the little lion and its coat is cut to enhance that look. It is part of the small breed dogs and stands at 10 to 13 inches in height and weighs in at 9 to 18 pounds. It lives to about 14 years. The head is short but has a broad skull. With the muzzle, the same length or a touch shorted than the rear of the skull, this is broad to look at. The Lowchen nose is dark in colour and most commonly black.

This pretty dog came from Tibet, in the Himalayan Mountains, hundreds of years ago. The Lhasa Apso was considered special to the holy men, and they thought that when the monk or holy man died his soul would live on in the dog. For many years, this breed was only bred and kept by Tibetan Nobles. As the nobles, of the time, were the only people allowed to keep this breed as well.

How Real Time Satellite Images Aid In Forecasting Weather Conditions

Real time satellite images can make forecasting weather conditions much more accurate because they show exactly what is happening in any given location. Satellite images show the intensity, speed and direction of storms, allowing a forecaster to give more accurate information to the areas in front of the storm.

By observing a satellite image, the forecaster can see what changes are taking place within the storm system over a period of time. If the storm is intensifying or breaking apart, changing directions, speeding up or slowing down, this will all become apparent in real time satellite images. This becomes especially beneficial in areas prone to hurricanes or tornados. The satellite images allow forecasters to predict with relative accuracy what areas may have the greatest threat of being hit by an approaching storm, thus allowing the local people to prepare.

A satellite image can also help forecasters determine the severity of the approaching storm. They can forecast heavy showers or snow storms, or light rain or flurries according to what the satellite images show. They can also see where severe conditions may be forming with in a larger less severe system.

This information can be used for many things besides preparing people for approaching weather conditions. Have you even seen awesome pictures of storms? Satellite images can help photographers determine where to set up to get some of those incredible storm or lightning pictures you’ve seen. By observing the location of severe weather cells within storms, photographers are able to determine if they will have a good chance to capture tornado, cloud formation or lightning pictures. They can also forecast when and where the safest places for taking these pictures will most likely be.

Real time satellite images have made weather forecasting much more accurate and useful than it was not so many years ago because of the details and amount of information available. Forecasters are able to give the public a much better picture of what to expect in the next week, day or hour because of information provided by satellite images.

Norwegian Elkhound Dog Breed History, Health Issues, Grooming, Living Conditions and Temperament

Description: This is a medium-sized dog which is sturdy to look at. With the visual Spitz look, the Norwegian Elkhound is short and square to look at, which enhances their sturdy look. With his wedge shaped head, that is broad, and the thick muzzle. The teeth should meet in a scissor bite. It has oval shaped eyes and these are dark brown. The ears are definite but mobile. The chest is deep and is somewhat wide. From the front view, their legs appear straight, with small and tight, oval paws with thick pads. The tail is curled tightly and is set high over the back of the dog. This breed has a weather resistant double coat, that is bulky and solid. The colour of this dog is grey with black tips and a lighter tummy and undercoat, with their black muzzle, ears and tip of the tail. The height of this breed is 19 to 21 inches for the dog and 18 to 20 inches for the bitch. Their weight for dogs is 50 to 60 pounds and the bitch is 40 to 55 pounds. This breed has a life expectancy of about 12 to 15 years.

History: The Norwegian Elkhound came from Scandinavia and is a very ancient breed, being thousands of years old. This dog would have worked as a hunting and guard dog for the Vikings, where they would have been utilised for tracking big and small game, working as a team with hunters. This dog works better at night, and is also adept as a sledge dog. If Norway were to go into war, then the Minister of defence can mobilise and use all privately owned Elkhounds. This breed was first shown at the Norwegian hunters Association in 1877. The AKC first recognized this breed in 1913. Due to this breed’s friendly and reliability, it is now a more enchanting family pet living in our homes.

Temperament: The Norwegian Elkhound is a bold loyal and friendly dog, he is alert dog, but can be somewhat reserved with strangers. This breed is the same as other Arctic dogs insomuch as having a strong mind of their own, and being independent. On saying this, they are affectionate to the family and shown great loyalty. This is a hard breed to train, in obedience, due to their independent thinking. However, with the firm, fair, pack leader, discipline can be obtained. This dog likes to roam, and it is part of the breed makeup to do so. This breed can bark, particularly on the night patrols and may well need teaching to stop barking. They can develop a tendency to fight with other dogs, but with early socialisation and a firm pack leader, the owner, this can be averted. It is wise to remember this is a hunting dog, and should not be trusted with small pets such as hamster’s mice and rats. This dog can be highly strung, if not given the most opportunity to use up their mental and physical energy’s.

Health issues: The Norwegian Elkhound breed is prone to hip dysplasia, PRA, pyotraumatic dermatitis, and sometimes we can see Fanconi syndrome. This dog can gain weight easily, so must not be overfed.

Grooming: The Norwegian Elkhound breed needs brushing, regularly, with extra care given to the coat, during the shedding season. The hairs stick to each other when the dog is shedding so removing with a rubber brush is important. As this dogs’ coat contains natural oils bathing should not be done, as it strips the natural oils.

Living conditions: The Norwegian Elkhound dog does well with a large garden and is still active indoors. The Norwegian elkhound can live in an apartment if exercise requirements are met.

Neapolitan Mastiff Dog Breed History, Temperament, Health Issues, Grooming and Living Conditions

Description: The Neapolitan Mastiff is a very strong dog, whose height is 26 to 30 inches in the dog and 24 to 28 inches in the bitch; this breed can weigh up to 165 pounds, with the largest recorded male being just short of 200 pounds. The body is large and stocky with great quantity of skin on the head and large dewlap. The head is flat and fairly wide and looks bigger than the rest of the body. The muzzle is one third the length of the head and is as broad as it is long. With a large nose that has opened nostrils, and the colour matches the coat. The Neapolitan Mastiff teeth can meet in a slight undershot bite, pincer or scissor bite. They have deep set eyes that are almost hidden by the dropping upper lids; the eye colour is either amber or brown depending on the coat colour. The Neapolitan Mastiff ears may be cropped, in countries that do not permit it, these are left natural. The tail is carried straight up and is rounded over the back. With sturdy legs this dog has rounded feet with well arched toes. Their coat is straight, very dense and short furred. The colours that come with this breed are; black, blue, grey tawny and mahogany and very rarely chocolate. A little white is permitted on the chest and toes, but there should never be white on the face. This breed has a short life expectancy of up to 10 years.

History: This breed descends from the Tibetan Mastiff, as do all European mastiffs. It’s generally believed to be the earliest member of the canine species. Being seen in Greece, in around 300 BC, and it was brought from India by Alexander the Great. The Greeks went on to introduce the dog to the Romans. Who use these dogs in circus combat. Another thought of how this breed started is that the Phoenicians brought this dog to Britain in 500 BC. The Neapolitan mastiff is a straight descendant of the Roman Molossus. The breed became extinct throughout the rest of Europe and survived only in Campania, this is why it is said that the Neapolitan Mastiff has existed in Campania for 2000 years. This dog has been used in war, and the blood sports, that the Romans were so fond of. This dog has a well-deserved reputation as a guard dog. This dog was first shown in Italy in 1946 and its standards were set in 1949. This is a rare dog to have in America and was recognized by the AKC in 2004.

Temperament: The Neapolitan Mastiff dog is not always as it appears, and is, in fact, very affectionate, calm and loving. They love their family and friends, and with their intelligence love to do their owners bidding. This dog is very protective and courageous, being quiet most of the time and only barking when necessary. It is a good idea to socialise and mix well as a puppy. The Neapolitan Mastiff is usually very kind to children, but really children will need to learn leadership skills. Obedience training is very important for this large dog, and this breed requires a strong willed owner, who understands, and is capable of, controlling this dog properly. With consistency and good training, this dog should do well. Neo’s will not listen to a timid person, and these are not dogs for the first time owner. This breed is a heavy droller, particular in hot weather.

The Neapolitan Mastiff breed requires daily walks for mental and physical exercise. If this dog doesn’t receive the correct amount of exercise, with a strong and consistent owner, they can become an overprotective and aggressive dog. Good guidance should be found on how best to correct and handle this dog to obtain the best of this breed.

Health issues: The Neapolitan Mastiff dog can have hip dysplasia, bloat, cherry eye and joint pain that will go as the dog gets older.

Grooming: Grooming is easy to do for this dog, using a rubber brush, removing dead hair and debris from a coat is all that is required.

Living conditions: The Neapolitan Mastiff can live in apartments as long as given adequate exercise. They only require a small garden that needs to offer shade on hot days.

Golden Retriever Dog Breed History, Health Issues, Grooming and Living Conditions

Description: The well known Golden Retriever is renowned for its gold-cream coloured coat that is of medium length, which should be straight or with a slight wave and feathering. Their undercoat is also weather proof. They are a well proportioned dog standing 20-24 inches and weighing 55-80lbs, the males should be larger than the females. They have a powerful appearance with a friendly and loving expression, with large soulful eyes, medium sized pendant ears and a black or brown nose on a wide muzzle. They are well balanced and robust working dogs with a soft mouth.

History: The Golden Retriever was developed in the late 1800s in the Scottish Highlands by Lord Tweedmouth. They are a cross between the yellow flat coated retriever, the Tweed water spaniel which is now extinct, other spaniel breeds, the Newfoundland and possibly even the bloodhound. They were bred not only to make good companions but also to be highly talented hunting and retrieving dogs, it is for this reason that they are so soft mouthed. They also have a good nose which makes good them a good scent dog for narcotics detecting. They have had a long history being used as therapy dogs, service dogs and as guide dogs for the blind. They are currently the 4th most popular breed of dog.

Temperament: The Golden Retriever is an intelligent dog who is gentle, loving and a joy to be around. They are easily trained and are friendly to everyone around them including other animals. It is highly unlikely for them to ever be aggressive though they can be watch dogs and may bark if somebody approaches. However they can become highly strung if not given enough exercise and mental stimulation. They love to swim and can make excellent agility dogs due to their love of exercise, fun, and good intelligence. They adore to please their owners which is another factor that makes them trainable for almost any purpose, they also enjoy competition. They have an excellent personality and are loyal and self assured, however if you ignore them or keep them in a kennel they can become destructive, they love and need human companionship. They are very patient and make a great dog for first time owners.

Health Issues: A generally sturdy dog full of vitality, the Golden Retriever does however suffer from hip dysplasia, congenital eye defects, heart problems, Von Willebrand’s disease, cancer and skin allergies. They are also one of those dogs that love their food so it’s important to watch how much you feed them as they can easily become obese. Their average life expectancy is 10-14 years.

Grooming: The Golden Retriever has moderate grooming requirements, they need a daily brushing due to the fact they constantly shed, especially in spring. You should also clean their ears and trim the hair around their bottoms on a regular basis. They should be dry shampooed regularly and only properly bathed when needed.

Living Conditions: Due to their gentle nature the Golden Retriever can live anywhere from apartments to houses, they do need a good daily walk but when they are inside they are fairly inactive so can live in relatively small places. However the perfect environment for them would be somewhere with a garden, so they can run around and play.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi Dog Breed History, Description, Grooming and Living Conditions

The Pembroke Welsh corgi is a stocky dog with short legs, which gives it the look of a large dog but is, in fact, obviously a small dog. They would normally have their dew claws removed. They are often born with no tail and it is popular to have the tail docked on pets that are born with a tail. Be aware though that tail docking is against the law in a variety of European countries, where docking can only be done if there is a health risk to the dog, or if such a severe injury has been received that removing the tail is the only option. They have a double coat the coarse outer layer and weather resistant softer undercoat. They are similar in appearance to the Cardigan Welsh corgi, the most obvious difference being, the Cardigan corgi has a tail and a slightly longer body.

History. The Pembroke was originally bred from the Cardigan Corgi. It is thought that the Pembroke terriers’ ancestors were taken to the British Isles, by the Flemish, in the 12th century, the Cardigan and the Pembroke share a history of several centuries. Corgis were originally bred as herding dogs, they were used to herd cattle, horses, etc., and they achieved this by running round the animals and nipping at their ankles. In 1934 it was decided that the two breeds were too different and from that point they have been classified as two separate breeds. The Pembroke Welsh corgi is also a favourite of the English Queen, and have been royal pets for over 70 years.

Temperament. The Pembroke Welsh corgi is a loyal and hard-working dog. They are commonly easy to train and are considered very clever, ranking number 11 of the smartest dog breeds in the world. They are very alert, and made good watchdogs as they react to unusual things with their customary bark. They are very friendly and have an outgoing nature. They are very energetic and playful, which you would expect from a herding dog.

Health issues. Corgis do suffer some inherent diseases; however, the majority of these are quite unusual. One of the most common problems with corgis is arthritis and osteoarthritis, but this is most common in dogs that have been improperly fed or are given inadequate exercise, thereby causing them to be overweight. The obvious way to help prevent this ailment is to give the dog regular exercise. They can also suffer eye problems, especially in later life, such things should obviously be handled by the vet.

Grooming. These dogs do shed fairly lightly all year-round, but they do shed substantial amounts on a seasonal basis. Most of the time you only need to brush the dog about once a week, but when it is shedding heavily it’s an idea to brush them daily. Given the fairly short coat of this dog grooming is actually quite easy, with the brushing just mentioned and giving baths when required, will help the dog remain looking attractive well into old age.

Living conditions. The Pembroke Welsh corgi is quite happy in most environments, be it a house, or apartment. They do require a reasonable amount of exercise; although they are only small they are strong and active dogs. The dog will be calm about the house, normally, as long as they have been exercised. Inadequate exercise can lead to restlessness when in the house, or apartment.

Siberian Husky Dog Breed History, Health Issues, Grooming, Temperament and Living Conditions

Description: The Siberian Husky is a medium sized dog, with the male dog measuring 21-23½ inches in height and the female bitch being 20-22 inches, with a weight for the dog of 45-60 pounds and the bitch being between 35-50 pounds. They were originally bred as sled dogs. They are compact and strong, almost low-slung, which makes them ideal for the work they were bred to do. They have a proportionately sized head, which is approximately half skull and half muzzle, with an oval shape to the eyes of medium size being moderately spaced. They have a double coat of medium length, which is thick, and holds in the body temperature. These dogs can tolerate temperatures as low as -50 to -60° centigrade (but we probably won’t want to be the person with them at these temperatures). Their triangular shaped ears stand erect, and are set high.

History: The Siberian Husky breed were used as guard dogs and to herd reindeer, although probably being best known for pulling sleds. They were used by the Chukchi tribe off the eastern side of the peninsula in Siberia. It was traders who originally took these dogs to Alaska, where they used to race them. Sleds used to be raced at great speed, as the dogs are so strong with an exceptional amount of stamina. The event was very popular and became official when, in 1908; the all Alaskan sweepstakes came about, which is a 408 mile race. These dogs also have a more significant history. In 1925 Alaska suffered an epidemic of diphtheria in the town of Nome. As most of Alaska is fairly isolated, with Nome being no different, the dogs were used to bring in much-needed medicines for the residents. In World War II, due to their great endurance of weather, they were used by the military in search and rescue efforts in the Arctic. In 1930 the breed were first recognized by the AKC.

Temperament: The Siberian Husky is a docile dog who is, commonly, relaxed and social. They are playful, loving and quite docile, along with their loving nature; they make an excellent house pet. They are particularly good with children and friendly to visitors, this makes them unsuitable for being a watchdog. As they appear to like everybody, they would probably greet any burglars with a toy and a wagging tail. As they bark little you are probably not even going to know someone was there. It is vital to assert authority over this breed. They are used to either leading or being led; if you do not lead them, they will probably decide that they are pack leader. As they have a high level of stamina these dogs require a lot of exercise, both mental and physical. They can become bored easily, and as a result may howl and become destructive. So if you are going to leave the dog for any period of time, they must be well exercised first. Their playfulness and love of fun makes them a great play companion for children and, with any luck, they will wear each other out.

Health issues: As a breed the Siberian Husky are prone to problems with their Urethra, eyes are another place that they can get problems and their skin. Along with hip dysplasia, which is common in many breeds. Apart from these they are healthy as a breed, living between 12 and 15 years. Grooming: These dogs shed twice a year, during this period they will require combing and brushing daily. Otherwise they are reasonably easy to groom only requiring occasional brushing or combing, as you see fit, to keep their coats in good condition.

Living conditions: Siberian Huskies will always do best in a large fenced yard. However, with adequate exercise they can live in an apartment, but they are quite active in doors so it would need to be a large apartment. They prefer cooler climates but can adapt quite well, as long as given adequate ventilation, if it is particularly warm a fan could be considered. For indoor living, they would need to be very well-trained, and particular attention needs to be paid to stopping them from getting bored.

How to drive safely in bad weather conditions

Now the days and nights are getting colder, more accidents are happening due to drivers not taking proper precautions. New drivers are twice as likely to have an accident in bad weather conditions than other road users as here are a few tips to ensure you stay safe this winter.

Whatever the weather if you are embarking on a long journey, it is wise to check to weather forecast for changes in precipitation, wind and most importantly other accidents.

In windy conditions, it is important to keep a firm grip with both hands on the steering wheel to avoid be blown over into other lanes, and drive slowly across wide open roads and bridges. Be especially careful for cyclists and motorbikes that may be blown into your path and give them extra room when overtaking. In wet weather it is important to keep a very big distance between you and the car in front as stopping distances can be 10 times longer than normal. If it is icy, beware of A and B roads that haven’t been gritted. Take the roads slow and if you do hit a patch of ice and skid steer INTO the skid and tap the break as opposed to slamming. It is also wise to keep well back from cars in front, even if you are in a safe BMW X3. Cardiff has many winding roads and many accidents occur on sharp bends where breaking has been underestimated and black ice has been hiding. Drive in a high gear, no lower than third to reduce the chances of wheel spin and flash break lights to warn cars behind if you hit bad patches. In snow, used dipped headlights and stop regularly to clear the windows and lights. Take care on hard packed snow for ice hidden beneath fresh snow. If the car gets stuck, don’t accelerate but put twigs, branches or whatever tough you can find to wedge in front of the driving wheels to climb out and avoid wheel spin. At night, on unlit roads, use the full-beam, watch your speed and avoid using your inside lights as they reflect against the windscreen and impair your vision. On motorways in the rain, avoid over taking heavy goods as spray can also impair your vision. In fog, drive with dipped headlights but don’t use the full beam as the light will be reflected from the fog particles and can be dazzling. Switch on the rear and front fog lights when visibility is less than 90 metres.

Pad the breaks in an event where you have to break very hard or on slippery surfaces, those who have assisted brakes can still benefit from this tactic. If you are unsure or feel the conditions could be worse then refrain from driving till you see an improvement.

Take your time and drive slowly and carefully to avoid the risk of an accident.
