Old proverbs such as this were the earliest weather forecasts. Passed down from generation to generation, these rhymes helped our ancestors recognize when a storm was brewing or a cold snap was on the way.

Long before Doppler radar, farmers and sailors in Colonial America knew how to predict the weather by reading the wind and watching the skies. Their approach to reading the weather is just as useful in today’s world.

Watching the Clouds

This is perhaps the best-known weather proverb, but what does it mean, exactly?

The type and color of clouds in the sky can be an excellent weather predictor. When the sun rises or sets, its light takes on a reddish tint as it is filtered through the atmosphere.

To have a red sky in the morning, the eastern sky needs to be clear of clouds and the western sky must be cloudy. Since the prevailing wind direction in the northern hemisphere is west to east, a red sky at morning means that storm clouds are headed your way.

Likewise, a red sky at night means that the clouds are to the east and clear skies to the west, all of which meant that you can expect a calm night.

Halo around the sun or moon,

Means rain or snow soon

This old rhyme can forecast precipitation within the next 24 hours. There are several different types of clouds, and the appearance of some is a pretty good sign that rain or snow are on their way.

A halo around either the sun or the moon is caused by ice crystal floating inside cirrostratus clouds. The ice crystals refract light, which will cause the halo mentioned in this proverb.

Cirrostratus clouds are very thin, high altitude clouds that give the sky a milky white appearance. If you see cirrostratus clouds, you can indeed expect rain or snow within 24 hours.

Written in the Wind

“He doesn’t know which way the wind is blowing.”

This old saying means that a person is a fool who can’t see an obvious trend.

Knowing the wind direction was vital to the lives of farmers and anyone working outdoors. That’s why every early American farmhouse featured a weathervane. The direction your weathervane pointed could warn a coming storm or tell if it was a good day to work the fields.

Colonial Americans loved weathervanes and adapted them into beautiful, ornate designs, including flying eagles, angels and leaping fish. In part these designs were aesthetic; in part they were functional, since they made the weathervane easier to read from across the fields.

So what does wind direction tell us? This proverb gives an idea.

When the wind is blowing in the North

No fisherman should set forth.

When the wind is blowing in the East,

‘Tis not fit for man nor beast.

When the wind is blowing in the South

It brings the food over the fish’s mouth.

When the wind is blowing in the West,

That is when the fishing’s best!

In the eastern half of the United States the prevailing winds blow from the west. A shift in wind direction toward the east or north means bad news. It could even mean that a dreaded “Nor’easter” was approaching.

Keep that in mind next time you see a weathervane. It might tell you whether you need your umbrella soon.

“How safe is it?” Along with “How much does it cost?” this is a question we often hear when someone is considering flight training as an option for depleting his or her discretionary income. Our industry has experienced a marked reduction in overall accidents and statistically, a 27.8% reduction in the most recent 7 years! During this same time period General Aviation fatal accidents dropped 32.6% to just over 1 fatality for every 100,000-flight hours.

So what is the industry doing to address the issue of pilot errors?

Maps and some pretty vital information will become your guide as you drive into an unknown area. This will make getting lost almost impossible because in every moment you could keep track on where you are and where you are going to.
Wi-Fi is a protocol for data transfer. This fine solution is implemented into almost every vehicle. It will provide information about weather, news and everything that is currently available in the region. This could be pretty entertaining too.
Many important parts of a Mercedes car are hooked up into a computer analyzing every condition they are facing and every reaction they are providing. It will only send a signal that a motion is required. This enables the action to occur quickly. This could safe you time when every second counts. For example you will be able to use the breaks in the moment you push the pedal which in many situations could be extremely important.
Some programmable Mercedes vehicles are available too. They use electronics to adjust the Mercedes car to the needs of the driver. For example lowering or raising ground clearance could be made easily. This enables the driver to pick the right choice for him.

Extraterrestrials

Ok so I have been asked to give my thoughts on extraterrestrials…what are my thoughts on extraterrestrials. This is a huge subject and certainly hard to know where to start. I must say that what I write may not be directly linked to my own beliefs. This will not be a rant…. more of stroll around a fascinating subject. So if it clashes with your own perception that is fine, just remember that this is a stroll and not a preaching of a belief system.

I suppose a stereotypical view of ET’s is the thought of little green men flying around. But this is not thought I agree with. I mean this is not to say there is not such a species, but first we must think of the vastness of space and then all the planets within and realise that the structure of other beings would definitely vary. And of course maybe some do not even have physical bodies…yes I realise that sounds a little strange but this is not out of the realm of possibility. Our universe is of course all energy at an atomic level and smaller. So who’s to say that all aliens vibrant at the same density as we do. I mean our eyes as wonderful as they are only capture a minute fraction of what is going on around us. But then this is not to say they do not perceive themselves as physical beings as their eyes maybe more highly evolved. First thing though I shall share this thought.

Dr Harrison H. Brown (California Institute of Technology) Estimates that virtually every star in our galaxy has a planetary system, in each of which, two or four planets might have an Earth-like environment and chemistry that encourages our kind of life to exist. He gives the enormous figure of 100 billion stars with planets in the Milky Way alone. (There are 450 billion galaxies)

They are some seriously big numbers. But are they correct? I do not know, but to be honest we all know without being astronomers that universe is ridiculously big. In my head when some one says there is no such thing as aliens, this is nothing but an illogical statement. There is no question in my head that beings exist outside of our planet. I would also put forward that there have been races else where in the universe that have long been and gone. Humans seem to perceive ourselves as highly evolved beings but although we are not doing bad, I would suspect there are far greater evolved species than humans. In terms of an evolutionary scale we are actually not that old and as for the characteristics of the human mind well I would say that is still rather primitive in it’s ways. I mean think of what we are doing to our planet and all the species that live upon it. But mostly think of the way we treat each other, with our messed up separatist attitudes and our egos flying all over the place causing at times utter chaos. Surely that is not the ways of a highly evolved mind…. we have a lot to learn.

 
So I suppose the question I need to ask myself is have we ever had alien visitation?

 
A man named Laurence Gardner said this: It took man over a million years to progress from using stones as he found them to realization that they could be chipped and flaked to better purpose. It then took another 500,000 years before Neanderthal man mastered the concept of stone tools, and a further 50,000 years before crops were cultivated and metallurgy was discovered. Hence, by all scales of evolutionary reckoning we should still be as far removed from any basic understanding of mathematics, engineering or science – But here we are only 7,000 years later, landing probes on mars…So, how did we inherit this wisdom, and from whom?

 
So of course his question is related to the theory of guidance by extraterrestrial biological entities. He ponders whether a race came from the stars and helped us make a jump in evolution. Well many may scoff at such a thought and label the man a nut. But the fact is there are many who lean to this theory and it is by no means a new idea or even one that stays at happening around 7,000 years ago. Many people and that includes the man who discovered DNA actually believe or at least lean towards the theory of our DNA originating from some where other than Earth. This theory even has a name and this is panspermia. The theory is that some how the DNA travelled here on maybe an asteroid, meteor etc…. maybe even aliens them selves and most likely ended up in the sea and then sparking the evolution of life upon this planet. The reasoning for this theory is that many believe the complexity of DNA could not have evolved in the time between the creation of the Earth and the first life to come about. They think the DNA is just too technical for this occurrence.

 
But there is a man who has studied the Sumerian tablets and spent many years studying this civilisation, which is believed to be the oldest. And this man, other researchers and many who agree with this believe that some thing took place in this time that effected humans considerably. They believe a race called the Annunaki came here from a planet called Niburu that takes a 3,6000 year cycle around the sun. Now they believe that when the planet came close the beings came here to harvest gold. Now they did not come to harvest gold for wealth but because as there planet moved further and further away from the sun it became very cold. So they were going to turn the gold in to fine particles and put it into their ionosphere to insulate their planet. It is said the humans were used as slaves. But what is said to of happened was the beings interbred with us humans and created a hybrid race, which of course is us. I will say that the Sumerians new the Earth revolved around the sun.

 
Now I will not say I agree with this but what I will say is the evolution of the human race definitely did appear to take a leap both in technical ability and biological form. You see the thing is the theory of evolution is just that, a theory. When Darwin came up with this it was based on assumption. The assumption was the finding of what is known as the missing link. He believed it would be found in his lifetime…only it was not. Many species have been found that have been believed to be the missing link, but none have stood the test of time and others were just ridiculous. They had built a replica of a missing link all from a tooth. But it was later found out that the tooth was actually a pig of some sort. There was another that (possibly java man, cant remember off the top of my head) was built up because a human femer was found about a meter away from a skull that looked like a humanoid. They built this being up and hailed it as the missing link but it was later discovered that it was nothing more than a monkey skull near a human femer. There was another that they realised walked on all fours but had been standing in a museum for years…that was removed. The point is many things have been called the missing link but none of them have been proven to be legitimate. But yet they still teach this in schools. Now I expect the creationists amongst you are feeling quite content right about now. But sit tight because I will get to you now.

 
Ok so what about religion? Many have also interpreted religion as alien intervention. Angels for instance and also beings depicted in hieroglyphs throughout the ages have been depicted with wings. Now many would say yes angels have wings but many would disagree with this thought and put up the argument of symbolic reference. Now what that means is the wings are symbolic to flight. Lets say for a second that beings had came from the stars and early man had witnessed this. They would see these beings come from above and that they flew to earth. Well early man may not be able describe such things and would use any reference that they can relate to. So what could they use to relate… well birds fly and they do this through the use of their wings. So the symbolic reference for flight is the wings. So when you look at the glyphs of Sumeria or angels we see winged beings. Could this be symbolic to beings that came from the stars? 

 
Ok so what about the fundamental reasons for most belief systems? Well of course many religions believe in a grand architect of the world, universe and whatever surpasses that. So where did this idea stem from? Well we have the theory of astro-theology that believes that religions are generally nothing more than sun worship and the heavens above. But many believe that there is a little more to it than that. They believe the idea of a god may again be related to extraterrestrials. It is thought that thousands of years ago early man may have just been going about his day when suddenly he may have heard a great rumble in the sky and magical bright lights coming towards him. A ship may have landed; beings came from the ship and maybe departed some information to early man. Now lets say this did occur… in fact think about if this happened in our time. We would see these beings as marvels and we may be in awe of their abilities to cross-space and enter our world. But we would not be as impressed or confused as we have reference points to this and of course we talk of possibilities in this very post. But early man would surely be astounded by this strange phenomenon as this is like nothing they would have ever seen. Would these beings be hailed as supreme beings…. maybe even Gods?

 
There is a more spiritual belief as well when it comes to ET’s. Many spiritual people believe that ET’s walk amongst us. They believe that there is what is known as Earth angels, beings that have the soul of another entity other than human. They believe that in the realms outside ours that they chose/agreed to come here to learn, to teach and to play a part in the evolution of the human mind. Now generally speaking there are a few different types of Earth angel. You have the angelic souls and the wise beings etc, but there are also believed to be something called star-seeds. They are said to be of extraterrestrial origin and they have crossed their souls to here for various reasons. They of course appear human as they have been born into the human physical form but fundamentally they do not feel 100% comfortable here as the souls come from elsewhere.

 
Now this is just my mind pondering but I have wondered if maybe aliens could even be us? I am not talking about our capabilities at the moment or suppressed technology but one day if we manage to last long enough, we may work out time travel. There have been rumours for years about the humans trying to crack this concept from Tesla, the nazi’s and to things like the Philadelphia experiment. But maybe we will one day understand how such a thing is possible and if we do then I am sure some one would come back. Maybe they would do this onboard some sort of craft and maybe we would perceive them as aliens.

 
So what about more recent thoughts about the ET issue? Well we had suspected ET activity at a place called Rendelsham forest many years back where it is said over a couple of nights an illuminated craft was seen by military personal. They even went in to the woods to take a closer look where it was said this thing was moving through the trees. They did not have any video evidence but one of the soldiers did take a voice recorder with him on the second night of activity. There has been many instances of UFO’s being caught on radar at break neck speeds and pulling off incredible feats of manoeuvrability. There was something that was caught on radar and also seen again by military personal at two separate bases, as well as other sightings through out the night. This UFO was seen coming into Wales and across the west side of England for over 5 hours.

 
There was also a case in Africa where a ship was said to have actually landed close to a school and beings even came out of their ship. This was said to have been witnessed by many of the children. There is also a tribe in Africa I think called the Dogons and what is strange about them is that they worship a suited like being. They dress some one up as this being and they could be perceived to have the look of an astronaut about them. But what is even more remarkable is that the tribe know the movement of the Sirius star system and this cannot be known by eye alone. It is assumed by sceptics that there must have been some travellers there years ago with a telescope.

 
And then there is the incident, which the world knows about and that is of course the Roswell incident. Was this a weather balloon or some thing else? I shall not speculate but this then does lead us into a shady area of government cover-ups and black ops. As we all know the Roswell area is home to groom lake, dreamland or the most familiar name… Area-51. Ufologists have swarmed this base for years and many lights are often seen flying around the area. Many have gone as far as to suggest the governments are actually working with the aliens without the public knowledge. Whether that is true or not I would not like to speculate. But I have no doubt that our own personal capabilities far exceed what we have been told. We only have to think of the stealth bomber to know that many secrets are kept.

 
When the bomber came out into public knowledge we where amazed but we soon realised that they had this plane for over a decade. So I think it is logical to say they have long been keeping things under wraps. It is known or maybe believed that there is a plane that can reach a good few thousand miles an hour and this is called the Aurora. But this has been speculated about for many years so if this is true then no doubt they have long since moved on again. We do know that something was caught coming out of America heading out across Europe and off towards Russia. The estimated speed was not far off double figures. (thousands)

 
There is a man called Nick Pope who worked for the M.O.D on what you could deem the x-files. He looked into possible UFO sightings for many years and he started off as extremely sceptical about the possibility of ET’s. But by the time his job had finished, his mind had changed somewhat. But governments have been looking into this issue for many years. The Americans had project grudge and Majestic 12 decades ago.

 
Sightings have been going on for years. There was the battle for L.A as well where shots where even fired at some crafts many, many years ago. But even in the wars, lights and crafts where being seen in the sky. As I am sure many have heard off foo fighters. This name was given to UFO’s during the wars.

 
Hitler’s men where trying to make disc shaped crafts and many actually believe they succeeded. The Americans took many of the German scientists/engineers under project paperclip after the war and stuck them in bases to get to work… could this have anything to do with area-51 and the other black ops that have gone on over the years? We do know German engineers played a huge part in the NASA space program.

 
In recent years we have had what is known as the disclosure project. Where many military personal, ex personal and, also radar traffic controllers. Have come forward and gave their accounts of UFO activity. Some accounts talk of having to ground all planes because of something hanging around and others are actual sightings around the military bases. There is definitely one but may have been more that actually talk of a UFO coming onto a missile base and proceeding to fry the components of the missiles. The witnesses all said they would be willing to testify under oath as to what they had seen. Now the point of the disclosure project is because they are afraid that humans trying to weaponise space could be deemed as hostile. They believe that their evidence conclusively proves that we are not alone and that these beings are far more technologically advanced than ourselves. So to weaponise space could be a big mistake and one that we must add these beings into the equation when we consider taking such actions.

 
So what is my personal take on all this? Do I believe we have originated from the stars? Do I believe we have been given a helping hand through out history, not only to evolve but also to maybe even protect us from ourselves? Do I believe that the government has had far more knowledge of this than we are lead to believe? I am an open minded kind of a guy and I would not want to bore you with my thoughts on all this.

 
I suppose we must remember though. That perceived from the outside that we to in our own right are extraterrestrials.

 Since no one is listening, between us, this guy is never doing to much thinking, which means first he is acting and than he is thinking about his activity, all his decision making proses is like a lightening, for good or for worse what ever the out come will be.

Do you want to see an example, enter to the Joseph Jacobs (1890) fairy tale “jack and the Beanstalk” we have a nice example. Jack did not do too much thinking, he went up, penetrating the giant’s castle, stealing his goose and running away, Jack showed a lot of guts, a grate deal of enthusiasm but I ‘m sceptical if he did some planing work before his activity.

Yes I forgot to mention since the guy has a short “fuse” it is not recommended to get him angry’ this guy can become fury, aggressive cruel and brutal,

Most of the reasons are that he must be the winner in any coast in must be the successor. Along with that after he let his furriest out he is not a revengable and vindictive type (this title we shall live for some one else in the zodiac)

Moreover this is the ultimate adventurer, what’s is rely scaring about this guy that he dent know what fear means, as I mention before this is a borne leader a talented manager, excellent officer build-in in his genes.

Our guy is going in his way and any one has to follow, he will fight for his opinions and his truth, if the bystander does not believe that he is going straight, never mind as long as our guy believes he is A-O-K, he doesn’t need nighter modesty nor tact .if you don’t agree with him that your problem.

For those types the name of the game is INTUITION our type thinks from his stomach, I may say that he is a real “astronaut”, since in his mind he is not on our planet, matter of fact no buddy knows were it is, including himself. He is living in world formed by his imagination, he will play any part his imagination will take him to, he really believe in it, even a Polygraph questionary wont find out the truth.

Our type is a very un- materialistic person, he doesn’t relate to the reality of his surroundings, he despises all conventionalities, he is living in some idyllic Utopia, and we humans can’t understand the sphere and logic he is living in,.

He is at his best, creating no matter what just letting his imagination loose, the world of art is his escape, painting, poetry, literature, acting, sculpture, music, you name it.

Another field that this type is in his best, is the esoteric world, the mystic world, the best magicians, forecasters, tarot and coffee readers, astrology, in any esoteric field, he is the best.

OOHH yes he is relaxing near the water, it could be the sea, a seeming poll, lake, pond, fishing, diving, sailing, what ever, the water is giving him the needed inspiration.

I think it is that time of year when the cops are out in full force. I keep seeing all these new speed traps on my way to work and a countless number of people pulled over getting a ticket for whatever reason. This irritates me simply for the fact that it slows down traffic cause people want to rubberneck. Well I came across this article by the National Motorists Association and theyve got some pretty good tips. Theres nothing more irritating than being pulled over getting a ticket.

Heres the list:

1.) Try not to drive faster than 9 mph over the posted limit on the highway and about 5-6 mph above the posted limit on secondary roads.

In most places, most cops will not ticket you if youre within this range. Part of the reason is simply that most car speedometers are not perfectly calibrated and so its easier to challenge such a trivial ticket in court. Exceptions to this include 25 mph/school zones where you should never drive even a single mph faster than the posted limit.

2.) Dont drive significantly faster (or slower) than the traffic around you.

If you do, youll stick out and if theres a cop around, he will notice and focus on you. Learn from the prey animals of the African savannah: There is safety in numbers. Even if you are driving faster than the speed limit, if youre one of a dozen cars in a pack, theres only a one in twelve chance the cop will target you.

3.) Never speed at night, especially after midnight.

There are more cops on the road during these hours and fewer cars. You will stand out. And the cops are looking for any excuse to pull you over, because night-time is DWI time and every car a cop comes across will be closely scrutinized. Give him a reason any reason to pull you over and he will pull you over.

4.) Make sure your cars registration, license plates and state inspection are always up to date.

Cops are trained to look for passed-due inspection stickers (and also things like cracked windshields and dead headlights/brake lights, etc.)

5.) Pay attention to the behavior of other drivers, especially if youre driving in an unfamiliar area.

If you see cars ahead suddenly slowing down for no apparent reason (or oncoming cars are flashing their lights at you) its likely theres a radar trap up ahead. Slow down now.

6.) Be on guard driving through small towns you dont know, especially small towns just off an Interstate or when a major road goes directly through a small town.

Speed traps are a reality of life and youre most likely to encounter one when driving through a small town in the middle of nowhere. Some towns get a large percentage of their budget from traffic tickets and the local yokel cops are on the lookout for cars with out of state plates because they know the driver is not likely to come all the way back there to try to fight the ticket in court no matter how trumped-up the ticket might be. Its unfair, but its the reality on the ground.

7.) Be on the alert for sudden (and often poorly indicated) reductions in the posted speed limit.

On many roads, the maximum will drop from say 55 to 45 for no obvious reason and sometimes, therell be a cop just after the sign change, waiting for you with his radar gun. Watch for work zones where the limit may drop by half (and the fines double).

8.) Educate yourself about photo radar, or automated tickets.

If youre traveling to say Phoenix, AZ or Washington, DC be forewarned that these areas use automated cameras to ticket people for both red light running and speeding. You may get no warning and have no idea you just got a ticket until it arrives in the mail a few weeks later.

9.) Familiarize yourself with the makes/models of cars that cops tend to drive.

The most commonly used cop cars (marked and unmarked) are the Ford Crown Victoria, the Chevy Impala and the Dodge Charger. The nice thing about the Vic is that its very easy to pick out because its very large and pretty much only cops and older people drive them. The Impalas harder to sniff out because they are anonymous-looking and really blend into the crowd. The Chargers even worse because its a popular car and also a car that younger, sporty drivers favor. But in general, be on the alert whenever one of these cars is around; be extra wary if you see telltale signs such as multiple low-profile antennas, large tires with inexpensive-looking trim rims/hub caps and a spotlight on the drivers side door.

10.) Dont exceed the posted in adverse weather such as heavy rain or when its snowy.

Not only is it unsafe, it may also be a moving violation even though you may not have been driving faster than the posted maximum. Keep in mind that the speed limit is just that the lawful maximum under ideal conditions. If a cop sees you driving faster than he deems safe for conditions, he can still pull you over and give you a ticket. And besides, this is a case where slower really is safer. Even if you have a 4WD vehicle, it takes longer to stop (and the vehicle is more prone to skidding out) if the roads are wet or slicked from snow/ice. – Thanks to National Motorists Association for this list.

Just make sure if you are headed to your Texas Chevy Dealer so excited about getting a new car. You take your time. Ha ha. Can you think of anything they left out?

With so many options for discounted multifunction marine electronics, how do you decide which system is right for you? Here are a few pointers about features to look for in basic models and what additional features you can expect in more expensive marine GPS electronics.

Select the Type of GPS You Want

When it comes to marine GPS, you can choose between a handheld unit, a combo GPS/chart plotter or a standard GPS receiver that will be hooked to your computer. Each has its own advantages and drawbacks.

If you are looking for an accurate, but inexpensive GPS unit that can be used on and off the boat, then consider a handheld GPS with basic features. On-board marine electronics often include GPS receivers as an integrated package. You can find combo GPS fish finders, chart plotters, radars and other marine GPS combos.

Think of the Environment

In this case, the environment you and your GPS will be in. On the open water you are exposed to very bright sun, making it hard to read all but the brightest displays. Even on calm days you may experience choppy waters that will interfere with your balance. At times like this a handheld GPS with a small screen may be hard to read. What’s more, their small controls will be hard to manipulate when you are struggling to maintain your balance. If you do a lot of sailing on rough water, then consider a GPS or GPS combo that has a large display and large control knobs for easy navigation on bobbing waves.

If you have a small boat, finding shaded or below-deck space for a computer to link to the standard GPS might present a problem. Keep in mind that computer screens are not designed to be viewed in direct sunlight. Another consideration when selecting the best marine GPS for your boat is how much dashboard space you have. For a small boat and dash look for marine electronics that can be expanded in the future to incorporate other devices in a single display. For larger boats with a spacious dash, consider whether you want to load the dash up with multiple displays or if you prefer one integrated model that presents a large, high resolution viewing area. If you have a large boat it might make sense to have more than one display for your fish finder, GPS navigation and radar.

Figure Out What Else You Want Your GPS to Do

Nowadays, even the most basic budget GPS models are highly accurate and capable of storing thousands of points of interest. It might be all that you need. On the other hand, if you are into fishing, you might consider a GPS/fish finder combo. A GPS/ chart plotter multifunction unit might be especially useful to boaters.

If you are not certain whether you need some of the features, check if the marine GPS unit you consider buying offers expansion capabilities. For example, a fairly budget-friendly Si-Tex ColorMax 5 and ColorMax 7 are both basic marine GPS/chart plotter combos that can be expanded to integrate fish finder, radar and other marine electronics components.

Decide What Features You Can Do Without

Many marine GPS units are now heavily loaded with additional features. Some might be very useful while others might turn out to be nothing but costly detractors. Decide for yourself whether you need your multifunction GPS to play MP3′s, synch with your Bluetooth headset for hands-free navigation, or provide live weather updates. Compare features offered on different models at your price point. Are you paying for a high resolution display, the ability to upgrade with additional marine electronics or additional features that you will never use?

There are many good GPS marine electronics on the market. Choosing the right one is a balance between understanding what features are available, knowing your own boating needs, and comparison shopping for GPS marine electronics in your price range. 

You must understand the steering and sailing rules and be able to apply them to various traffic situations. Although all rules of the road are important, the steering and sailing rules are the most essential to know to avoid collision. Knowing who is the stand-on or give-way vessel is essential to operating your boat safely. There are various rules that apply to specific situations. Here are some important examples….

LOOKOUT

All vessels are required to maintain a proper lookout at all times by using both sight and sound. In addition the lookout must use any additional means available such as using radar or VHF-Radio in the prevailing circumstances and conditions to fully assess the situation and determine if risk of collision is present. The lookout must consider all relevant factors including, but not limited to, the state of weather, conditions of visibility, traffic density, and proximity to navigational hazards.

SAFE SPEED

Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed. This rule alerts you to the need to set a safe speed in all conditions of visibility. This obviously does not mean the same “safe speed” applies in good as well as restricted visibility. Under this rule you must use your best judgment to determine safe speed for your vessel to be able to take proper and effective action to prevent collision.

It is important to note that the present rule contains no requirements to stop a vessel’s engines, reduce speed to bare steerageway, or to go at a “moderate” speed. Safe speed may very well require these or other actions in good as well as restricted visibility. Under this rule you must use your best judgment to determine the safe speed for your vessel to be able to take proper and effective action to avoid collision.

RISK OF COLLISION

As a boat operator you are required to use all available means appropriate to the prevailing circumstances to determine if a risk of collision exists.  If you have any doubt at all you are to operate your boat with the assumption that a risk of collision does exist.

Many vessels are not equipped with common navigational devices including a compass, radar, depth finder, etc. that are in good working order. You should recognize all of the possible dangers that could exist and be especially alert to any approach between vessels at a close range. The bearing of an approaching vessel should be determined and monitored by frequent visual observation.

ACTION TO AVOID COLLISION

Any action you take to avoid a collision must be taken early enough to be effective and must be large enough to be readily apparent to the other vessel. Always remember that changes in a vessels course are usually easier to identify and are apparent earlier on radar than are changes in a vessels speed. Consequently, Rule 8 advises against making a series of small course or speed changes that may not be detected soon enough by other vessels. All actions taken to avoid collision should result in passing at a safe distance. Therefore, you must carefully check the effectiveness of your actions until the other vessel finally passes you and is clear.

OVERTAKING

Any vessel overtaking another must keep clear of the overtaken vessel. An overtaking vessel is one that is approaching another vessel from any direction more than 22.5 degrees abaft its beam. When in doubt, assume you are overtaking and act accordingly.

This rule recognizes than an overtaking vessel should have less problems in keeping clear and avoiding collision than the vessel that is being overtaken. Even in the event that the overtaken vessel agrees by sound signal or radio transmission to allow the maneuver.

HEAD ON

When two vessels meet head on, or nearly so each boat must change course to starboard and pass port-to-port. In inland waters, a whistle signal is sounded when the vessels are in sight and within 1⁄2 mile of each other. If the meeting vessels are already far enough off each other to pass clear on their present courses, no signal is sounded.

Such a situation shall be deemed to exist when a vessel sees the other ahead or nearly ahead by night she could see the masthead lights of the other inline or nearly inline and/or both sidelights and by day she observes the corresponding aspect of the vessel.

CROSSING

When two power-driven vessels are crossing and involve risk of collision the vessel having the other to starboard must keep out of the way and will avoid usually by turning to starboard and passing astern of the other vessel or, if circumstances permit, speeding up and crossing ahead of the other vessel.

GIVEWAY AND STAND-ON VESSELS

In practically all situations, a stand-on vessel must maintain course and speed. The give-way vessel in a crossing situation is required to alter course and/or speed to pass astern of the other.

Overtaking vessels, regardless of the method of propulsion, are always give-way vessels.

A vessel on the starboard side in a crossing situation is the stand-on vessel, and one on the port side is the give-way vessel unless it is a sailing vessel crossing a power-driven vessel. Vessels driven by machinery are always required to stand clear of sailing vessels unless being overtaken.

RESPONSIBILITY

This rule states that nothing in the rules shall exonerate any vessel owner, master or crew, from the consequences of any neglect to comply with these rules or of neglect of any precaution, which may be required by any situation not covered by the rules.

In short this rule requires you to use your experience, judgment, and principles of “good seamanship” to supplement the rules or even to take action that may appear to conflict with the rules in a circumstance not covered by the rules if necessary to avoid collision. This rule recognizes that no body of rules can address every possible situation that arises on the water.

By the time you finish this, you may conclude that this particular peculiar interpretation of the Book of Revelation should be relegated to the teachings of self-appointed cranks, crackpots, prophets of doom and various other assorted fanatics. But perhaps, even so, your own view may be clarified when you read this. The first chapter deals with theology and may be slightly dull, but fasten your seatbelt, as I will get more and more weird ahead (in terms of any interpretation you have seen before). Note that I make use of mostly unobtainable texts and obscure films. Lack of access to these sources should not impede your understanding of what follows. So you’ve just been pulled over by a Police officer that radar gunned you going ( supposedly ) 10 miles over the speed limit. But the last sign you read said 65 MPH? How could this be? You are an honest citizen who NEVER would break the law! ( on purpose anyway ) The first thing that is popping into your head at that moment is… “Oh man, I’m in BIG trouble!” But far in the back of your head you are wondering.. “How do I BEAT a speeding ticket?”

You realize that this is not possible, and you give the officer over all your information, admitting your guilt. But are you really guilty? The government would LOVE to have you believe all this and collect their money. But you don’t NEED higher insurance and the expense of that ticket. So you NEED to find out the answer, “How DO I beat a speeding ticket?”.

First of all, there is no need to panic. Beating the speeding ticket may not be possible, but it WILL be highly improbable if you just GIVE IN, so don’t! The first question the officer will ask you is “Do you know why I pulled you over?” Your very first response should be “No officer, I don’t.” Rule #1 is to never admit guilt, this will get you more respect from the officer and he MAY just decide to give you a warning, you never can tell.

But if that doesn’t happen, when the officer asks you for your Drivers License kindly reply ” Can I reach for it Sir?” This will show him that you are compliant and respectful, and most importantly that you aren’t carrying a gun on you. It’s also very important that you take note of your surroundings. If you have a paper and pencil on you, write down any information you can including: weather conditions, patrol car register #, speed equipment used, condition of your car, and general things that are happening around you.

”This all sounds fine and dandy,” you are saying to yourself. “But how do I beat a speeding ticket for real?” This leads me up to the important part of taking steps to beat the ticket; entering your plea.

If you live far from the courthouse you can also request a hearing by mail. Be professional and remember to state all the facts of what happened when you got pulled over. If this does not work out, and you MUST show up, be their BEFORE your court appointed time. Be professional and ALWAYS try to create reasonable doubt in the mind of the judge. Ask the officer what the correct procedures are for handling the radar or laser unit? how and when was it last calibrated? how were the weather conditions and traffic flow?

You will be surprised. Many Police officers do not know the answers to some of these questions. If this is the case, your ticket could be thrown out immediately. These are just SOME of the tactics you could use.
